The Colosseum
The Colosseum is the biggest and most known attraction in Rome. The Colosseum is an amphitheatre, and it was once named the Flavian Amphitheatre. This was because the Flavian Emperors were ruling Rome around that time. The Colosseum took six years to complete, and it opened in 80 A.D. To celebrate the opening of the Colosseum, there were 100 days of games called the Inaugural games of the Flavian Amphitheatre.
The Colosseum could fit 50,000 to 80,000 people when gladiator battles and other events took place. About 400,000 people died in the Colosseum due to the events.
The Roman Forum
The Roman Forum was once the most important forum in Rome. The forum is between the Capitoline and Palatine hills, which is about a 10 minute walk from the Colosseum. The forum was made up of several structures and the remains of the buildings can be seen today. The Roman Forum held public meetings, law courts, and some gladiatorial fights. There were also shops and markets held at the forum. When the Roman Empire was ruling Rome, the forum was used mainly for religious and secular spectacles and ceremonies.
The Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps is a grand staircase with about 138 steps. The steps will lead you down to the Piazza di Spagna which is one of the famous squares in Rome. If you go up the stairs you will reach the church, Trinita dei Monti. Francesco de Sanctis designed the Spanish Steps and in 1725 the construction of the steps finished. The Spanish Steps is the longest and widest in Europe. When spring arrives in Rome, the staircase is decorated with beautiful pink and white azalea flowers. Then in December, the steps light up for Christmas. There is usually a tree lit up in the middle of the steps during this time.
